The neuroactive steroid allopregnanolone (ALLO) is an endogenous positive allosteric modulator of GABA type A receptor (GABAAR), and the down-regulation of its biosynthesis has been attributed to the development of mood disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
